Japanese dining experiences

Not a dish, but a way of eating — how people eat out in Japan.

Izakaya 居酒屋

A casual Japanese pub where you drink and eat small dishes such as yakitori.

What to expect:
Staff usually greet you with “Irasshaimase!” and bring a wet towel (oshibori). Some places have an English menu if you ask.
How ordering usually works:
Order a drink first — beer, sake or shochu — then a few dishes at a time. Plates tend to be small, so groups often share them.
Good to know:
Some izakaya bring a small appetizer (otoshi) before you order and include it in a cover charge. Not all do, and some let you decline — ask the staff.
Why try it:
It’s usually an inexpensive way to try several Japanese dishes in one evening, among locals.
